Daniel has been a musician for over 40 years, starting with beginner piano and alto saxophone in middle school. His principal instrument is bass and began playing in rock bands since 1984 and continues to do so today. He has two professional certificates from the Berklee College of Music—one in audio production and the other in bass performance—and is working on an advanced certificate from Berklee in music theory, harmony, and ear training. He teaches bass guitar at any level, beginner piano, beginner to intermediate guitar, music theory and is eager to explore the possibilities of teaching music production using GarageBand or Logic and even teaching songwriting (music and lyrics). He has a PhD in British Literature and taught at the college level as an English professor for 20 years at Widener University, Pennsylvania, before leaving academia to focus on music. He plays bass in several local cover bands to stay in playing shape, but he is also the singer-songwriter and producer for the original band Smart Barker, playing bass, guitar, keyboards, and sequencing MIDI instruments. His students learn the importance of music theory and proper technique but also of creativity and spontaneity in music. He was fortunate to have excellent music teachers as a teenager and uses what he learned then nearly every day as a working musician and music producer. He knows from experience that music education truly does last a lifetime.
