Beautiful trees in Alpine County California

San Diego is an amazing county filled with all kinds of music, art, and culture. The music scene varies from intimate blues clubs, an amazing symphony, some of the nation’s top theatres, an opera house, and a history of pop and rock artists making their grand start right in its cafes. Whether they are playing in a small jazz club in North Park after a long day of teaching lessons, or working in a sound studio with an orchestra on a score for a new Sony video game after talking with their student about how they got their big start with the Youth Symphony, or on a stage as a rock singer at Earth Fest where they waved down at their students from their platform, or in a production at the Old Globe or La Jolla Playhouse after they have sung all day with their own pupils, our instructors in Alpine area are active and connected and bring their experiences to the table when they teach.

Joanna S.

Joanna has been teaching piano and voice since 1991. Some of her students have gone to become music majors in performance and education. She has a passion for her students to grow to love and appreciate every aspect of music as a language. In voice, her emphasis has been children’s education using Kodaly (a Hungarian curriculum based on three different styles of teaching from Italy, England and France). Other studies would include solfege, voice, piano performance, Alex technique emphasis performance, release, and a piano studies emphasis in theory. She is also certified by the state of California as an Activity Director. She started playing in church when she was 12 years old and started arranging some simple versions of hymns. She has been in competitions in her junior high years and performances. She was very involved in musicals in high school and sang in elite choirs in college. She has written Christian Contemporary music for churches and written children’s musicals. She also composes classical contemporary music with stories. Her plans are to someday write the stories in books for expressive therapy for children, learning disabilities, and dementia to help them to learn to express more creativity and gain confidence and an awareness of music with art and color. She also does music awareness in retirement homes. In 1996, she wrote Christian contemporary music for a ministry and participated as one of the singers and soloists on cable TV for a year. She is a member A.S.C.A.P. and has had music on local Christian radio stations and throughout Europe. She has performed piano and voice in different areas in Riverside, San Diego, and Colorado.

Laura C.

My name is Laura and I’m from Romania. I come from a family of musicians. My father is a conductor, and my mother was a concert pianist. I'm a professional singer & violinist with more than 12 years of teaching experience! I was the founder, manager, lead vocalist and violinist for Duo Strings Cafe, an established Café Concert band in Bucharest. I performed in various Mariachi and pop / rock bands in Romania. I'm also an actress and played various opera and theater roles like the soprano Caterina Cavalieri in the "Amadeus " play. I offer singing & violin classes to students of all ages. I'm a vocal coach versed in various styles (pop, rock, Latino, jazz, etc.) I have been playing the violin since I was 5 years old. I've graduated with a Bachelor of Art in classical canto. It was always my dream to manage and teach in a music school, this is why I opened my own in Bucharest. It had 2 branches and a separate recording studio location. I love my job because of the satisfaction I get from witnessing my students' passion grow as they improve. During my singing classes the students learn how to breathe correctly. I will also teach them about proper posture, rhythm, articulation and train their ears. We will be able to differentiate and properly switch between voice registers, from chest voice, to head, mix, falsetto. I will also show them different voice "effects" like vocal fry, adding distortion, using twang, belting... During violin classes, i will start with some exercises focusing on technique, scales, rhythm and bow control. We'll brush up on our previous lessons, then we'll go through the homework till we finally get to the best part of our lesson: playing a song. The violin aids in keeping a straight posture and improves our hands dexterity. I look forward to seeing you in class!
